The laptop market has changed significantly in 2026. New Apple M5 machines, Intel’s latest Core Ultra processors, newer AMD platforms and a growing number of AI-focused Windows laptops are giving buyers more choices than ever.
But better specifications do not automatically mean a better laptop. Battery life, display quality, thermals, keyboard, portability, software compatibility and price can make a much bigger difference in everyday use.
Based on recent hands-on testing and updated recommendations from major technology publications, these are some of the laptops worth watching in 2026.
1. Apple MacBook Air M5 — Best Overall for Most People
The MacBook Air M5 remains one of the strongest choices for everyday users.
The latest 13-inch model combines Apple’s M5 processor with a thin, fanless design, making it particularly attractive for students, professionals, writers, developers and people who travel frequently.
Recent testing lists the M5 MacBook Air among the strongest all-around laptops, with excellent performance for everyday productivity and light creative work. RTINGS also highlights its silent operation, build quality and ability to handle multitasking and programming.
Best for:
- Office work
- Students
- Web browsing
- Programming
- Content creation
- Travel
Main strengths:
- Excellent performance
- Very good battery life
- Lightweight design
- Silent fanless operation
- High-quality display
- 512GB base storage on the current model
Things to consider: The 60Hz display and limited number of ports make it less suitable for some professional workflows.
2. Dell XPS 14 (2026) — Best Premium Windows Alternative
Dell has brought the XPS name back in 2026, and the new XPS 14 represents a significant redesign.
It uses Intel’s latest Core Ultra platform and is available with a high-quality OLED display. Reviews praise its premium aluminum construction, portability and improved design compared with recent XPS generations.
Tom’s Guide reports that the OLED version tested reached 12 hours and 23 minutes of battery life, while its entry-level configuration exceeded 20 hours in their testing.
Best for:
- Windows professionals
- Business users
- Frequent travelers
- Premium laptop buyers
Pros:
- Premium build
- Excellent display options
- Strong performance
- Improved portability
- Good battery efficiency
Cons:
- Expensive
- No USB-A port
- Entry-level configurations may not provide enough performance for the price
3. MacBook Pro M5 — Best for Professional Work
If you regularly edit video, work with large files, develop software or perform demanding creative work, the MacBook Pro M5 family is a more appropriate choice than the Air.
Higher-end M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations provide substantially more CPU and GPU resources and can be configured with large amounts of unified memory. RTINGS currently ranks the MacBook Pro 14 among its top laptops for demanding professional workloads.
Best for:
- Video editors
- Developers
- Photographers
- Designers
- 3D professionals
- AI and heavy computing workloads
The biggest downside is simple: price.
4. Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Ultra — Excellent Windows Ultraportable
Lenovo continues to be a strong competitor in the thin-and-light Windows category.
The Yoga Slim 7 Ultra is among the newer models being considered by laptop reviewers in 2026. WIRED specifically updated its recommendations after testing the Yoga Slim 7 Ultra.
It is worth considering if you want a lightweight Windows machine without moving to macOS.
Best for:
- Office work
- Students
- Business travel
- Productivity
- Users who prefer Windows
Lenovo’s broader 2026 lineup also includes refreshed ThinkPad models and new-generation hardware aimed at business users.
5. ASUS Zenbook Series — Excellent for Portable Windows Computing
ASUS continues to focus heavily on thin AI-enabled laptops in 2026.
The company’s current Zenbook family includes models with OLED displays, modern Intel and Qualcomm processors and configurations designed around AI workloads.
For buyers who prioritize screen quality, portability and premium design, the Zenbook range is worth considering.
6. Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra — The New Premium AI Laptop
One of the most interesting new laptop launches this month is Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra.
Microsoft has announced availability beginning October 16, 2026, with a starting price of $2,599. The base configuration includes an 18-core CPU, 24GB of memory and 512GB storage. It features a 15-inch HDR touchscreen with brightness reaching up to 2,000 nits.
The machine is part of a new generation of laptops using NVIDIA’s RTX Spark platform.
Why it is interesting:
- High-end AI performance
- 15-inch HDR touchscreen
- Premium aluminum design
- Up to 128GB unified memory
- Multiple USB-C ports
- HDMI
- USB-A
- SD card reader
However, this is definitely a premium machine, not a mainstream budget laptop.

What Should You Buy?
For most people, I would narrow the choice down to three:
Best overall: MacBook Air M5
Best Windows premium laptop: Dell XPS 14
Best professional laptop: MacBook Pro M5
If you specifically need Windows software, gaming or upgrade flexibility, Windows laptops remain the better choice. If battery life, silence and portability are your priorities and your software works on macOS, the MacBook Air M5 is particularly compelling.
The 2026 market is also moving toward AI-focused PCs, but buyers should not pay a large premium simply because a laptop carries an “AI PC” label. Processor performance, RAM, storage, display and battery life still matter more for most everyday users.
